| ‘ A Wiltshire town rocks and rolls and revels for three
weeks of eye-popping extravaganza… Since a sparky
impressario called Helen Marriage took over, it
has increased its audiences by 500%… a miracle of modern British culture. ’ The Times May '98 |

| On her appointment as director of the long-established Salisbury Festival, Helen Marriage quickly discovered an appetite for adventure in the city’s inhabitants. Working with Nicky Webb, she set about transforming the event into a festival of international significance. Attendances rocketed and the Festival began to attract visitors from far afield. Visiting orchestras rubbed shoulders with street theatre groups, theatre companies collided with poets and jazz musicians. The gorgeous medieval city provided a fabulous backdrop for sculpture exhibitions and light installations, and the once-cautious audience revelled in what the Financial Times called their ‘love affair with the arts’. |
