Creative Director for Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture – curtailed due to Covid-19.

In January 2019, Artichoke was appointed as Creative Director of Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture to help shape the programme and build its international content around the themes of landscape, language and migration. The programme was launched in September 2019 with a spectacular display by French company Gratte Ciel and in February 2020, a series of fire festivals across the county opened the year. Finnish light artist Kari Kola’s Savage Beauty was the first major international commission, exploring landscape in one of the largest site-specific light works ever across 6 miles of the Connemara mountain range. Planned to go live to coincide with the St Patrick’s day weekend, the outbreak of the Covid-2019 pandemic meant that the four-day long installation had to be cancelled. Artichoke’s involvement in Galway 2020 ceased with the outbreak of COVID 19, but the programme continues in a reduced form through to March 2021.

Kari Kola was able to document his entire installation during the technical testing and created a special digital edition which can be seen here.

“Coupled with the vast expertise and creativity of the Galway 2020 team, we are excited about the ambitious and visionary display of arts and culture that we will deliver.”
